The changing dynamics of supply chain in the UK retail sector

Jonathan Smith and Jane McGinn
April 2008

The UK retail sector has undergone significant change in the past few years and is recognised as one of the fastest moving industry sectors.

Ten to fifteen years ago supply chain was barely recognised as a profession. Today, a top-flight supply chain executive is a strategic decision maker with a thorough understanding of finance and technology; strong relationship development skills; and the ability to operate on the global stage. Despite this, supply chain still lags behind other retail functions in terms of recognition, remuneration and board representation.

Supply chain leaders need to continue establishing their profession and demonstrate the contribution it makes to the commercial success of an organisation. They must be prepared to challenge the perceptions of the function and extend their influence across the entire business, demonstrating collaborative behaviour, cross-functional thinking and effective leadership.

The leading industry bodies are playing their part through the establishment of approved training and qualifications for the profession, but the biggest impact on the future of the function will be made by the supply chain community itself.
