Switzerland Point of View: Summer 2009

July 2009

This edition of Point of View focuses on leadership and the qualities that distinguish exceptional leaders. We examine the impact and immediate consequences of the current downturn as well as the ability of leaders based in Switzerland to respond to new challenges and opportunities and deal with risk.

J. Maurice Zufferey asks whether the present generation of leaders is about to fail, given that the current crisis has exposed systemic weaknesses in public life, from economics and business to politics. Markus Koch and Andreas Hürlimann look at how CEOs are under increasing pressure to implement sometimes unpopular measures; they must be clear in the decisions they make and the way they communicate strategy. Antonio Maturo relays conversations with leaders in French-speaking Switzerland about taking action in turbulent times. Andreas Hürlimann asks When should CEOs be replaced? And finally, Phil Le Goff defines the concept of Executive Intelligence and uncovers the skills that distinguish great leaders.
